More Happy Dogs!

We are in the process of adding more pawsome stories about how acupuncture has helped a few dogs on the North Shore area of MA on the Four Paws Acupuncture Happy Dogs Page website.

Meanwhile... here is a sneak preview!

"My dog, Mino, has been getting acupuncture once a week for the last month and is showing good improvement! He’s back to chasing his two sisters and is *running* in bursts around the yard
Arthritis sucks."  Leslie S.

"Lucy has been acting 5 years younger since getting acupuncture treatments!" Rick B

"Maddy loves to chase his favorite ball in the yard!" Meg O

These happy dogs all had a combination of acupuncture, laser therapy, acupressure as well as some recommendations for herbal and or homeopathic remedies to ease pain and reduce symptoms.

The owners aka guardians of these dogs all participated in their dog's healing process by following recommendations for herbal/homeopathic remedies, doing massage and acupressure on their dogs daily and using the "stinky herbal liniment" during the massages. Thanks to their help, these dogs had a much faster rate of recovering than most dogs.

Unfortunately many dog owners think that it will only take one acupuncture session to "heal" their dog's symptoms and that no participation at home is necessary. Acupuncture is not a miracle cure. It takes at least 3-4 sessions in a row (one per week) to see a positive change in your dog's symptoms. Just like joining a gym, you cannot expect to leave thin and fit after your first workout!

It also takes a combination of supplements, herbs or other natural remedies to speed up the healing process along with acupressure done at home.

A big FOUR PAWS up thanks to all those dog guardians who have been such wonderful pet parents!

Happy Summer!

Friday June 21 is the official start of summer. Time to make sure you keep your pets cool and safe.

Make sure they have plenty of water, a cool place to rest inside with either a fan or AC on during brutally hot days.

Please never keep your dog in a car without the AC on or the windows open during hot days.

Summer is a wonderful time to put up a kiddy pool in your yard for your dog to stay cool and even get some aqua-therapy. Swimming is gentle exercise for dogs with arthritis, hip and elbow dysplasia and back problems.

One of the most FAQ about animal acupuncture I get asked is how often should my dog or cat get treatments?

Depending on how acute or chronic its condition will determine how many treatments it takes to see positive results.

Acupuncture is not a one time miracle fix for people or animals! There are no instant cures for anything.

Healing any condition takes time and a combination of several therapies. The patient may feel relief after the first session, in some cases it may experience some pain which will subside in a day. This is because acupuncture helps energy aka chi or qi to move. When there is stuck energy, there is pain.

It is recommend that the patient get treatments at least four weeks in a row for the maximum benefit. Usually by the third session you will notice a major improvement in yourself, your dog or cat.

Just like exercise, it is a cumulative process for the body to adjust and start to mend. It is like joining a gym, going once or twice and expecting to wake up thin and fit.

Treating animals has made me think outside the box. My sessions includes more than acupuncture. I like to combine traditional Chinese Medicine, laser therapy, acupressure with herbal liniments and sometimes Reiki depending on the patient's needs.

All owners receive an info packet with samples and recommended supplements, dietary changes or remedies and where to buy them. They also are shown acupressure points to massage in between sessions. I find that the dog or cat will recover much faster when their guardians follow this advice.

Can Acupuncture Treat Serious Dog Agility Injuries?

Can Acupuncture Treat Serious Dog Agility Injuries?

Serious injuries such as fractures, dislocations, torn tendons, and serious internal injuries should be first treated by a veterinarian.

Recovery from many of these injuries, however, can be augmented by acupuncture, herbs and nutrition.

Acupuncture & Traditional Chinese Medicine can also help reduce the pain and symptoms of post-operative surgery, arthritis, neurological issues, hip and elbow dysplasia, knee and shoulder injuries and pain.

Most dog patients have improved performance in their agility after a series of acupuncture sessions.

Prevention of Sports & Agility Injuries

Chinese medicine has many tools to help prevent injuries and the recurrence of injuries. Through acupuncture, nutrition, herbal support, and proper preparation and training, injuries can be minimized or avoided. Oriental medicine is also helpful in treating old injuries that sideline your dog’s play in later years. Regular treatment helps your dog’s body stay in balance. A body in balance is less susceptible to injury and illness.

Oriental medicine approaches health in a holistic manner. In the Chinese medical framework, the body is seen as an energetic collection of functions, in contrast to the Western view of the body as a mechanical collection of parts.

When Fleas Invade

To rid your home of fleas, get a box of 20 Mule Team Borax (available in your grocery store laundry aisle), and spread it lightly over your carpet. Use a broom to sweep it deeply into the carpet. Wait a couple of hours then vacuum. The residual Borax that remains in the carpet will kill the fleas and their larvae simply by drying them out.

Make sure your pets do not walk on the floor while the Borax is there. It can be absorbed into their feet.

When washing dog or cat beds, towels and sheets sprinkle Borax on them before washing as a precaution to kill any eggs that might be hiding in the fibers.

Herbal Flea Spray

This is recommended after vacuuming the Borax off the carpets and washing all pet beds.

In a large spray bottle mix:
  • 4 liters of apple cider vinegar
  • 2 liters of water
  • 500 ml of lemon juice
  • 250 ml of witch hazel

Spray the natural flea remedy to your home on carpets, furniture, pet bedding, window sills, and floors.
DO NOT SPRAY ON YOUR PETS!
Plants That Keep Fleas Away:
  • Penny Royal
  • Chrysanthemums
  • Lavender
  • Spearmint
