Happy Summer!

Friday June 21 is the official start of summer. Time to make sure you keep your pets cool and safe.

Make sure they have plenty of water, a cool place to rest inside with either a fan or AC on during brutally hot days.

Please never keep your dog in a car without the AC on or the windows open during hot days.

Summer is a wonderful time to put up a kiddy pool in your yard for your dog to stay cool and even get some aqua-therapy. Swimming is gentle exercise for dogs with arthritis, hip and elbow dysplasia and back problems.

Treating Canine Arthritis Naturally Part One

This article was written several years ago and published on the Acufinder.com website.  As this is a longer article it will take a few blog posts to cover this entire topic. Here are a few snippets:

Treating Canine Arthritis Naturally Part One

jeanie mossa kraft M.S., L.Ac.

Just like humans, many dogs suffer from arthritis pain and inflammation as they age. Joints and bones naturally degenerate over time. Fortunately, arthritis can often be managed with the help of acupuncture, Traditional Chinese Medicine, supplements and nutrition. Natural and alternative therapies are generally safe, effective and can be used in conjunction with western medicine.

A good place to start is with a few natural supplements. If your dog suffers from arthritis, these are a few natural remedies that are helpful:

* Supplements containing glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate with MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) will help protect and lubricate joints. Research has shown that MSM has an strong anti-inflammatory effect. Glucosamine has been studied for over 20 years in humans, and has been proven effective to relieve arthritic joint pain in animals and humans. Please note that it may take four to six weeks before your dog show significant results from these supplements.

* An Omega 3 essential fatty acid supplement from fish, krill oil or flaxseed oil also works as an anti-inflammatory. These help to lubricate the joints and help with inflammation. Omega 3 oils will also improve the health and appearance of your dog's coat. Omega 3 oils have been proven to help reduce excess weight in dogs, a very helpful effect as a heavy dog puts more stress on arthritic joints.

Our dog loves these Krill Oil soft chews. They help with itchy skin and mobility.

* Nutritional supplements containing enzymes and antioxidants have been shown to reduce inflammation, promote healthy joints, increase circulation and support immune function. One product of this type in Wobenzym(r), a nutritional product for humans. I've received good reports from people using this supplement with arthritic dogs. (I recommend the human version of Wobenzym, not the dog supplement as it was banned in Germany!)

Acupuncture House Call Guidlines

Four Paws Acupuncture House Call Guidelines

Thank you for helping me make each session for your pet the best that it can possibly be. Please note everyone receives this email before their first session.

During my years of making house calls I have discovered a few guidelines that make your pet’s session more relaxing and to receive the most benefits from the treatment. Working with animals takes a bit more focus and energy. As I incorporate many modalities of holistic therapies into this session, both your pet and I need to stay calm and focused.

1.    Pick a room or area that your dog/cat is most comfortable. If they have a favorite blanket or toy keep it handy.

2.    Please take your dog out to pee before I arrive.

3.    The owner must be in the room with me and the dog/cat during the entire session. You are part of your dog/cat’s family and this helps keep them relaxed. I also ask the owner to participate to help keep the dog/cat still during the session as needed. Keeping the owner involved makes the animal happy and usually better behaved. During the session, I will also be showing you how to massage, do basic acupressure and apply liniments. Please note this guideline is also for liability reasons.

4.    Please turn off all TV, radio, video games or music unless it is classical soothing music.

5.    Please no cell phone or texting during the session unless it is an emergency. Stay focused on your pet.

6.    Please no cooking, doing homework, or any other activities that will require you to get up and down and leave the room.

7.    Children may watch but must be quiet and respect the dog/cat and me.

8.    No Smoking in the room.

9.    Please refrain from eating during the session. Usually most dogs will focus on the food which makes it difficult to keep them calm.

Thank you for not inviting neighbors and friends to watch this session. It’s fun for the neighbors, but very distracting for your pet.

Payment is due at the time of service. I accept cash, credit cards and checks.
