A walk through the Salem Commons!

This past weekend the largest ouija board in the world was on display on the Salem Commons, Salem MA. Quan Yin had a chance to view it, summon a few spirits and then decided she rather roll in the grass!

The alien pod on her back leg seems to be shrinking oh-s0-slightly. Maybe it is wishful thinking but we really do think the Mercola Mushrooms for Pets are making a big difference along with a few other Chinese herbs and formulas.

A big thanks to all who have sent kind words and healing thoughts to our girl.

Please note that Four Paws Acupuncture will be closed from Saturday October 26th through Sunday November 3rd in honor of the Great Pumpkin. I will not be making house-calls or treating patients at Our Family Veterinary Services that week. Nor will i be responding to many emails or texts in a timely fashion.

If there is a medical emergency please call your veterinarian.

Preparing for your dog's first acupuncture session...

I have several calls, emails and texts each day requesting acupuncture appointments for dogs and cats. I am happy to accommodate as many patients as possible. Please note, I do not have an office staff or receptionist.

Before I can schedule an acupuncture session for your dog or cat, there are a few forms that will need to be filled out first. One is a referral form that requires your vet to complete. By MA law, I cannot treat your pet until this is completed.

The other is a New Patient Health History Form which is completed by the owner. This gives me information about your pet and helps me to determine what type of treatment plan is needed. It also gives me permission to treat your dog or cat. This also must be completed before your appointment.

More information on forms and rates:

Cooking for Quan Yin

Our girl, Quan Yin Kali Wu has not been doing well digesting her food since the brutal heat wave a few weeks ago. We were feeding her a combination of Taste of the Wild wet & dry food with green beans, carrots and sometimes white basmati rice. She is allergic to chicken so we used the fish based foods.

After the whole drama with the FDA blasting most of the better pet foods around, we decided to start cooking for her instead. I use to cook for my German Shepherd Merlin in his later years and he loved it.

We bought a rice cooker and have been cooking organic white basmati rice. (White rice is better for dogs with loose stools.) We add about a half of cup of the cooked rice to a combo of cooked ground turkey with carrots, celery and parsley..... and she LOVES it. No loose stools or diarrhea since the change.

Easy peasy and it is probably more cost effective in the long run. In between meals she gets a few gluten free treats and a big organic carrot.

Four Paws Acupuncture is located on the North Shore of MA. Licensed acupuncturist, herbalist & author Jeanie Mossa MS, L.Ac. makes house-calls to Salem MA, Beverly MA and to existing patients in Marblehead MA.

She also treats patients at Our Family Veterinary Services in Peabody MA.

Acupuncture House-call Guidelines

Animal Acupuncture House Call Guidelines

During my many years of making house calls I have found that a few guidelines were needed to make your pet’s session relaxing and for it to receive the most benefits from the treatment. Working with animals takes a bit more focus and energy. As I incorporate many modalities of holistic therapies into this session, I also need to stay calm and focused.

Thank you for helping me make each session for your pet the best that it can possibly be.

Pick a room or area that your dog/cat is most comfortable. If they have a favorite blanket or toy keep it handy. Please take your dog out to pee before I arrive if necessary.

The owner must be in the room with me and the dog/cat during the entire session. You are part of your dog/cat’s family. This is for liability reasons! I cannot be in your house alone with your pet or children. I cannot stress this enough. This is for your protection as well as mine. This keeps the dog/cat relaxed. I also ask the owner to participate to help keep the dog/cat still during the session. Keeping the owner involved makes the animal happy and usually better behaved. During the session, I will also be showing you how to massage, do basic acupressure and apply liniments.
Please note this is also for liability reasons.

Please turn off all TV, radio, video games or music unless it is classical soothing music.

Please no cell phone, texting during the session unless it is an emergency.

Please! No cooking, doing homework, or any other activities that will require you to get up and down and leave the room.

Children may watch but must be quiet and respect the dog/cat and me.

No Smoking in the room.

Please note I am allergic to peanuts. I ask that you do not feed your dog any peanut treats or have them in the room on the before or during the session.

Please refrain from bringing food or eating during the session. Usually most dogs will focus on the food which makes it difficult to keep them calm.

Thank you for not inviting neighbors and friends to watch this session.

Payment is due at the time of service. I accept cash, credit cards and checks.

I make house-calls to Salem MA, Beverly MA and Peabody MA. I also treat dog and cat patients at Our Family Veterinary Services in Peabody MA.
To schedule a session or to learn more about acupuncture for your dog or cat please visit the Four Paws Acupuncture website: http://www.fourpawsacupuncture.com

Cooking for your dog

Here are a few recipes that I have used for my dog Merlin (on the right) when during his last few years. Merlin had hip dysplasia, pain, arthritis and was 13 when I started giving him acupuncture, herbs and changed his diet. During this time I was still in acupuncture college. Merlin was the inspiration to start Four Paws Acupuncture after seeing how holistic therapies helped him. He lived to be almost 15 - which is amazing for a German Shepherd!

Recipe for Merlin’s Magic Congee
Grains should be thoroughly cooked for animals, as they don’t really chew their food well. Congee is a Chinese dish made from rice, meat and vegetables that is slow cooked and easy to digest.
In a crock pot or heavy pot with lid add:
5 cups of spring or filtered (not tap) water or free-range chicken broth. (Do not use chicken broth with onions or if the dog is allergic to chicken.)
1 cup rice - White Basmati is best for summer, warm weather or dogs prone to loose stools. Brown rice best for cold weather or dogs prone to constipation.
Several pieces of frozen or fresh organic chicken or turkey.
1 cup or more of chopped or frozen veggies such as carrots, celery, sweet potato, yams, parsley, string beans.
You can add a small handful of raw tonifying Chinese herbs such as Astragalus, Dang Gui, Ginseng or Codenopsis in the congee if you are able to find these. Ask a licensed acupuncturist.
If cooking in a crock pot, set on low and cook for 4-6 hours. If using a heavy pot on the stove, set the flame or electric burner on the lowest setting, and cook for 4-6 hours.

This recipe was given to me by Nikki's owner, Maria who cooked for Nikki and nursed her back to health.

Cooking with Oats

Here is another recipe with oats, to use on special occasions and holidays. Oats are great for relieving stress and calming a nervous dog.
Nikki’s Grateful Oats Recipe for Dogs
Boil two cups water, add one cup of quick cooking rolled oats, remove from heat, cover and passively cook for 45 min. Boil ground turkey or ground chicken about two cups drain and cool.
Steam either green beans, baby carrots or sweet potatoes with a couple cloves of fresh garlic so they are soft, let cool. Add a sprig of parsley for good breath and serve in your favorite holiday dog bowl.

Cinnamon Meatballs for Dogs

Here is a meatball recipe for your dog with warming cinnamon for those dogs affected by cold damp winter days.
NOTE: Please do not add onion to this recipe as onion is toxic for dogs.
Cinnamon Meatballs for Dogs
1/2 pound of free range/organic ground chicken or turkey
1/4 cup of shredded carrots (optional)
3 tablespoons of fresh or dried parsley (great for dog breath)
1 teaspoon of salt
1/8 cup of parmesan cheese
1 egg (leave out if the dog is allergic to chicken.)
1 tablespoon of cinnamon
