Calming Solutions for Pets

Quan Yin is a rescue and has PTSD during storms, fireworks and loud BOOMS! We use a combination of things to help calm her down.

Bach Flower Rescue Remedy - which can be used for people too. A combo of 5 flower essences that relieve stress, anxiety and trauma. You can add a few drops to your pet's water, a cookie or spray them. I do not use the pet version of this product- the human version is less expensive and works just as well.

Hyland's Calms Forte: A homeopathic remedy to help calm the mind. Does not interfere with medication. It is a small pill that can be crushed up into your pet's food, a cookie or put under their tongue. I take this myself on nights that my mind is whirling!

ThunderShirt - Quan Yin loves wearing her Thundershirt during stressful times. www.thundershirt.com

We also play calming music, run the dishwasher, washer or dryer for background noise during storms or fireworks.

K9 Laser Therapy

This is Boris, a Divine K9 from the infamous Monks of New Skete getting a laser treatment. When we lived in Salem many years ago, my husband and I drove up to visit the Monks of New Skete and their magnificent German Shepherds several times a year. An amazing place to visit. And it is definitely GSD heaven. Most of the times were were there we were able to play with the puppies too. Ahhhhh! Puppy breath! https://newskete.org/our-dogs

Laser Therapy

Laser therapy also known as laser acupuncture is a noninvasive procedure that uses light to stimulate cell regeneration, reduce inflammation and increase blood circulation.

During this session, a laser will be used to stimulate acupuncture points on the body that are specific for reducing pain, promoting circulation and boosting the immune system. It does not require the animal to be still. Most dogs love it. (Sometimes cats want to chase it!)

Nubi juan Kenobi gets acupuncture!

This is our cat, Nubi juan Kenobi getting acupuncture several years ago. He was in pain due to a urinary tract complication and we were waiting for the veterinary hospital to open. He allowed me to needle him and it did not fix the urinary blockage, but it did relieve some of his pain. We brought him to the vet as soon as they opened. He ended up needing surgery.

Nubi is 17 and is alive and well! He is happy being back in Salem MA. He loves laying in a nice warm sunny spot. During the winter I use heating pad that can be microwaved, cover it with a towel and put it in his bed near the window where he can also watch the birds. Such luxury!

People ask me if I treat cats. I treat mostly dogs with acupuncture - they are much easier than cats! Cats are more suspicious and sometimes will hide when a stranger comes into their home. Some cooperate and will allow me to needle them. Others I have to use the laser instead - which of course they like to chase. I decide whether to take on a cat patient depending on their diagnosis.

Walking in a winter wonderland!

Salem is covered in white today! We had about 5 inches of snow so far... maybe more. So peaceful and magical to walk through.

This is the bike path that leads to Collins Cove Beach. The city actually plowed it today so we were able to walk the dog.

Frozen waves at Collins Cove beach. Amazing sight and sooooooo cold! Loved it. Captured a video but not sure if i can post it on this blog.

Unicorns love snow!

Animal Reiki

Animal Reiki by Jeanie Mossa

I like to combine several modalities during your dog's acupuncture session. I do not believe there is one magic bullet that cures everything. (Or as one of my professors from acupuncture college would say "Only ham is cured!") In my experience it takes a few different therapies, perhaps some herbs, a change in diet and supplements for lasting positive results.

Acupuncture is a form of energy work, even though needles are placed into the patient which is physical. It moves energy aka qi (chi). Combined with Reiki it has an even more powerful effect. I usually do a bit of Reiki during every session. Whenever I do Reiki on myself, all our animals come into the room with me and become very relaxed.

Animal Reiki

Reiki has been used on primarily on humans. Because it is a gentle and non-invasive therapy animals find it stress free. Reiki is said to heal on many levels of the patient's being, physical, mental and emotional. It is safe and is one of the few therapies that brings no harm to the recipient.

During a Reiki session your animal does not need to be confined or restrained as it is a vibrational modality. Most animals will make it known where they prefer to be during the session.

Jeanie Mossa is now making animal acupuncture house-calls in Salem, Peabody and Beverly MA by appointment only. Please use our contact us form to schedule a session. We will need a referral from your veterinarian. A PDF will be sent to you via email for your vet.

Animal Acupressure

Quan Yin loves receiving massages and acupressure.
Who doesn't?

Animal Acupressure

Acupressure is a Traditional Chinese Therapy used in at least 5,000 years ago. It began in ancient China where it was imperative to care for not only people, but their farm animals for survival. This form of massage was used on horses, cattle and other small animals.

Traditional Chinese medicine works on the theory of promoting energy through the body. This energy is often referred to as "qi" or "chi". When the flow of qi becomes blocked, the body and mind may experience physical or emotional pain and illness.

This form of massage is based on the acupuncture meridians and theory.

Happy Birthday Merlin Bird Mossa!

Nina Ballerina and her son Merlin Bird Mossa

Today is the birthday of Merlin Bird Mossa, who was the inspiration to start Four Paws Acupuncture. Merlin had hip dysplasia, arthritis and a few other problems when he turned 12. The vet wanted to "put him down" when Merlin was having trouble walking. This was NOT an option!

So instead, while I was in acupuncture school in San Diego - I learned how to treat Merlin with acupuncture, herbs and changed his diet. It did not cure his hip dysplasia, however he was able to walk better, out of pain and much happier. He loved going to Dog Beach, in Ocean Beach San Diego every Sunday until he passed 9/23/97.

He lived to be almost 15 which is amazing for a German Shepherd. Because of Merlin, i pursued more education geared towards animal acupuncture and other holistic therapies for dogs and cats.

Every year i light a candle in honor of Merlin's birthday and thank him. His spirit lives on. He was my doggie soulmate and anyone who has a dog will understand that bond of love.

Give your pets an extra treat today in honor of Merlin!

Visit the Four Paws Acupuncture page for more information on animal acupuncture on the North Shore of MA.
